Dancing in the Stillness - Spiritual Evolution

Dancing in the Stillness

The whole of creation and the Cosmos is on its long , and continuing, journey of evolution. This is a journey that has being unfolding for almost 14 billion years.  Our species Homo Sapiens, ( the Wise People) are part of this evolution. We too have evolved both physically and psychologically.   Therefore, it is not surprising to consider that in addition, we are on a Spiritual Journey that also evolves as we do. Our ultimate take is to discover our birth right which is the 'wisdom within' . In these way we truly evolve and become true members of  Homo Sapiens

One of the vital tasks for humanity in the 21st Century, is to regain and re-work the wisdom from the ancestors. They were very aware that they were part of creation and that any impact on nature or the environment would also impact on them. The spiritual wisdom of all Traditions reminds us that, to evolve spiritually , we need to transcend our Ego Self if we are to find our True and Evolutionary Self and transform the egocentric small self into the True Self. How can we we begin to access the True or Evolutionary Self ?

The Spiritual Masters tell us that a sure path is one that 'finds'  a space or abyss within. This is often referred to as a place of Silence and Stillness, where our True Self can evolve, develop and enter into a relationship with the Mystery at the Heart of Creation. This practice of stillness is often referred to as one that involves ' Dancing Across the Abyss of Silence.

This is a practice of deep contemplation that , to many, seems strange and difficult. Modern people, and especially those in Western Society, have a deep , ingrained  work and effort ethic built into their collective DNA ( not literally but their cultural DNA). We have been 'indoctrinated' with the idea of 'independence' and 'self-autonomy'. Therefore , we must find practices and ways of ' doing' things. We forget the simple fact that ' we are human BEINGS and not human DOINGS. Therefore, any practice that suggests 'sitting still and doing nothing' seems to be wrong. However, most break throughs in human consciousness and development are counter- intuitive.

Cave of the Heart   ( Castle of Brahman)    The Heart is often used in Spirituality to denote 'that place' where one meets the Mystery  and also one's True Self. One of the loveliest passages in all the Sacred Texts comes from the Hindu Upanishads ( the Chandoga) , which has a wonderful teaching on the Cave of the Heart.

Note ; The Hindu Sacred Texts contain many Upanishads. These are texts whose authors are mostly unknown Sages. The  Sanskrit word Upanishad     roughly translates as ' to sit at the feet of a master'   They contain wise teaching from a Master ( male or female) that requires the reader to adopt the 'mindset' of a disciple and to sit at the Master's feet and learn.

The Chandoga  reflects on  the Mystery that the Hindu Sages call Brahman or Ultimate Reality. It uses the metaphor of a Castle to reflect on this Reality. Many 'disciples' ask their Teacher ' ' Where can I find God ?  The Chandoga tells us that this Reality can be found ' In the Centre of the Castle of Brahman ... '  in the 'cave of the heart '  Brahman or Ultimate Reality, is what Western Religions call God, Yahweh  or Allah.

A short extract from the Upanishad is found below This expresses the 'place' where one meets Mystery and finds Silence & Stillness. Note how deep and wise is this teaching. It encompasses the whole of the Cosmos, which it says is all contained in God or the Great Spirit and paradoxically , this Spirit can be found within the Heart of everyone.
