The Search for the True Self

WHO AM I ?

This is the Theme of our Satsang Meeting on Sat 14th May in Wolverhampton.

Thomas Merton, arguably one of the greatest Christian Mystics of the past few centuries, has this to say about the choice that faces all on the Spiritual Journey.

We will reflect on this and much more on Saturday.

Notice of May/June Meetings

We live in times of rapid changes and our World faces so many challenges.
Our Planet is a very small 'boat' floating in the Ocean of the Vast Cosmos.
We will end this year of Meetings with a day of Reflection on Love & Compassion.

Our Human Family  urgently needs to recognise our shared underlying Unity in Diversity.  Our next two meetings will focus on this Truth.

Day Of Reflection :-  Love & Compassion - Twin Virtues

Friends Meeting House, Summerfield Road   Wolverhampton

The Seeds of Compassion

Planting the Seeds of  Universal Compassion

The 'Seeds' of Universal Compassion are  rooted in the twin virtues of LOVE and Self- Compassion.  Without these  it is impossible to begin the vital task of developing, enriching and planting  Compassion in all our hearts

The following quote from Albert Einstein encapsulates the spirit of the Satsang.

It is part of a series of short reflection designed to assist us in our preparation  for our Day of Reflection  on Sat June 19th

Very often our world views compassion and a 'soft' option. However, it requires both courage and humility to both develop self-compassion and to reach out with a compassionate  heart to others.

Reflecting on the Cosmos

OUR RESPONSIBILITY
As Co-Creators in the Unfolding Cosmos

The following are some wise words from Thomas Keating, they emphasise our responsiblility to play an ethical and constructive part in the unfolding evolution of both the Cosmos and Consciousness

This sense of personal responsibility can be found in all cultures and all spiritual traditions.  The quote from the Native American Tradition is one of many examples

We are living in an era of great change, our world is 'shrinking' and we can no longer remain 'blind' to the challenges facing both our Planet and Humanity.

This short reflection ends with a quote from a Christian Mystic of the early part of the 20th Century.  We could benefit from reflecting deeply on its message

Reflecting on the Cosmos & Environment

The natural world is the larger sacred community to which we belong.

To be alienated from this community is to become destitute in all that makes us human.

To damage this community is to diminish our own existence.
( Thomas Berry )

Updating our Cosmology updates our Theology.

We are part of an ever expanding Cosmos that is 13.8 billion years old. We too are evolving and many people believe that we are currently facing an evolution in consciousness. Change always is accompanied by challenge and one natural response to challenge is resistance. This resistance can take many forms, one of which is violence.

Consequently, the Spiritual Traveller, needs to pause and reflect on the changes and challenges facing us in this current era of change.   With this in mind,

A DAY OF REFLECTION

 On the Cosmos & Environment

Saturday  12th  March   2016 :-     10.30 - 4.30

Friends Meeting House, Summerfield Road   Wolverhampton

"The realization that we know very little about the universe grows as we experience the presence of God ( Source)  everywhere. ... That divine presence enables us to forget ourselves and enter into collaboration with the creation of the universe.  Apparently, we have been given an enormous capacity to affect it.  We are accountable for everyone else in the human family and for all living things.  For all practical purposes, how we treat other people is what we are doing to ourselves.“ Thomas Keating 2015

This Day of Reflection will provide an opportunity to look at several major problems and challenges  facing our human family. It will be an opportunity to take time to ' Sit by the Wayside' and reflect on the spiritual implications of being co-creators in this  vast, evolutionary and ever-expanding Cosmos. There will be time for silence and personal reflection.

Non-Violence and Compassion

DAY OF REFLECTION on Non-Violence

Arguably, poorly interpreted and dogmatic religion, have played a great part in feeding the fire of violence that plagues humanity. Yet, not enough focus has been placed on teachings concerning Non-Violence and Compassion that underpin all the great Faith Traditions.

On Saturday 16th January - The Midlands & North UK will hold a Day of Reflection on Non-Violence. This will take place at the
Friends Meeting House in Wolverhampton ( 10.30 - 4.30)

The following   excerpt from the Charter of Compassion outlines the need for all Religions to emphasise  the virtue of compassion, a virtue which is essential for any practise of Non-Violence.

We... call upon all men and women to restore compassion
to the centre of morality and religion ~

to return to the ancient principle that any interpretation of
scripture that breeds violence, hatred or disdain
is illegitimate ~

to ensure that youth are given accurate and respectful
information about other traditions, religions and cultures ~

to encourage a positive appreciation of cultural and
religious diversity ~

to cultivate an informed empathy with the suffering of
all human beings—even those regarded as enemies.

All are welcome to our Day of Reflection on AHIMSA - Non-Violence

Non - Violence - A Day of Reflection

DAY OF REFLECTION

ONE WORLD- ONE FAMILY

The Practice of Non- Violence

Ahimsa & Satyagraha

‘The reality today is that we are all interdependent and have to co-exist on this small planet. Therefore, the only sensible and intelligent way of resolving differences and clashes of interests, whether between individuals or nations, is through dialogue.  ( Dalai Lama)

FURTHER DETAILS

We live in times of rapid changes. There is an  explosion of technology and knowledge with consequential challenges to old certainties and ideas. It is often referred to as a post-religious era where increasingly many question authority , religions , political systems etc. The danger is that we can 'throw out the baby with the bath water'. How can we retain the essence of both Ancient  and Modern Wisdom and use this  to face the challenges of our Modern Times?

This Day of Reflection will provide an opportunity to look at the power  of adopting a Non- Violent approach to the challenges facing our human family. We will have both video and other input famous exemplars of Non- Violence e.g.  from Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jnr, Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela.  There will be time for Personal Reflection and Sharing
